Stories from the Siberian Arctic
Stories from the Siberian Arctic
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Evgenia Arbugaeva and singer Snow Raven join forces in a poetic reflection on time, memory and a world in rapid change.
Evgenia Arbugaeva, a photographer and filmmaker, is known for her poetic portrayal of her Arctic homeland. She presents her two short documentary films that reveal a shifting landscape through science and the myths of her people, the Sakha of northeastern Siberia. Haulout takes us to a battered hut on the shore of the Arctic Ocean, where the largest walrus gathering on Earth occurs. Chuuraa descends into the thawing permafrost and the mythological Underworld in search of an ancient creature.
The screening is followed by a live performance by Snow Raven (Khaar Suor), an Indigenous Sakha singer and educator. As a child, she learned the songs of her ancestors from her grandmother, and today she gives voice to the animals and landscapes of the North through vocal techniques, the khomus (jaw harp), drum and "Arctic beatbox" drawn from the breath of reindeer. This evening brings these two Sakha artists together for the first time.
