The Misanthrope
The Misanthrope
Sandra Oh stars in this razor-sharp reimagining of Molière's classic dark comedy.
Alice (Sandra Oh), a brilliant novelist, despises the hollow contemporary mantras of kindness and respect. But the bolder she becomes in speaking out, the more colleagues avoid her, and the more her personal relationships begin to fracture. As she challenges fashionable ideas and lends her voice to causes others are afraid to touch, she faces intense criticism and backlash. Alice will soon learn the price she must pay as an artist and as a woman for daring to speak her mind.
First performed on 15 June 1666 at the Théâtre du Palais‑Royal in Paris, The Misanthrope emerged at a pivotal moment in the reign of Louis XIV, when court life, power and social conventions weighed heavily on the public conscience. In this context, Molière crafted a verse comedy as serious as it is brilliant, questioning the role of sincerity in a world ruled by appearances. Less farcical than his other plays, it stands as a masterpiece of balance between social satire and emotional tension—and this new production shows these moral dilemmas are utterly timeless.
