Does the Hop support student performances?
The Hop Fellows play a primary role in curating student work and partnering with student groups on arts events. These include things like the Top of the Hop series and our annual HanUnder Arts Festival. These performance opportunities are free for student groups and in some cases, the student artists are paid.
The Hop also produces showcase events each year, providing full venue, production, marketing and ticketing support to student groups at no charge. These include things like the Dartmouth Dance Showcase each fall, a cappella showcases, our Arts Integration Expo, and collaborations with entities like Collis.
What about self-produced student performances?
These are a wonderful and essential part of the Hop, and the Hop offers space, technical and administrative support to work produced by students.
There are costs associated with these kind of performances due to direct staffing expenses incurred by the Hop. The Hop facilities team fields these requests and prepares an estimate for student groups inclusive of the facility and usage costs.
For student groups, there is an administrative fee that is a third the standard fee charged to non-student groups. This is currently $250 and is included in our estimate.
Marketing and ticketing support is subsidized for student groups to be 50% the standard rate, and these vary depending on the venue and complexity of these events and are included in our estimate.
Student groups are charged for production and front-of house support and this is included in our estimate.
The Hop does not control cleaning and some setup expenses, so these are passed on directly on to the student groups.
What spaces can students use to rehearse in the Hop?
Spaces for rehearsal depend on the activity. Music practice rooms can be booked through the Music Department. Students can use the Lessow Student Commons to collaborate on a variety of activities.
The Hop finally has a rehearsal space dedicated exclusively to dance. Positioned on the lower level and partially below ground level, the Hodgson Dance Studio includes 20-foot ceilings and a glass ribbon of windows to draw in the daylight and connect with the exterior plaza. It features a sprung floor, mirrored walls and an adjoined suite of changing rooms. For dance space, please use our Dance Space Request Form.
The Mindy Kaling Theater Lab is equipped with a sprung floor, lighting grid and a professional sound system. It mirrors the size of the Moore Theater stage and is conceived to support independent student productions from conception to performance. To book this space, please use our Space Request Form. By 10/13/25 the email address will be replaced by a form.

What spaces in the new Hop are great for students to hang out?
The Top of the Hop is often referred to as the "living room of the campus" and is a warm, welcoming, lounging space for students to gather and hang out. The space features a working fireplace, comfy new furniture and a bar. The bar is open regularly and for specific-themed gatherings. This acoustically isolated space prevents sound bleed to most parts of the building and supports informal performances.
The Lessow Student Commons offers a comfortable study and hangout space for students. There are ample plugs for computers and a screen so students can do presentations or watch a movie. This space is not reservable.
Do students get any ticketing benefits?
Yes! Dartmouth student pricing is as follows, unless otherwise noted:
Hop Presents or Hop-Produced performances: $10
Ensemble & Theater Department performances: $5
Hop Films & Films with Special Guests (excluding Telluride & HD broadcasts): $5
Met HD Broadcasts: Free (please contact the box office by email or phone 603.646.2422 to claim your tickets)

Do you have programs for career development in the arts?
Yes! The Hop offers arts administration fellowships to rising sophomores ('28s), juniors ('27s), seniors ('26s) and graduate students (where noted) who are enrolled for fall, winter and spring terms. The program values student agency. Overseen by the Office of Fellowships and Student Initiatives and staff mentors, its experiential learning core calls students to gain transferable skills via work at The Hop, build capacity by generating student arts-based events, and immerse in career development and artistic excursions.

Yes, you can read about them here.
Can students put up artwork?
There are galleries in the Hop which support studio artwork by Dartmouth students. Additional student-related flyers and art can be posted on the bulletin board in the Lessow Student Commons. Bulletin boards will soon be added to more spaces on the lower level of the building.
