21/22 Classes & Workshops

For Saturday, a decision about inclement weather will be made by 10 am that day. Please check back here for the most current information.

Join Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble to explore Soundpainting, a universal sign language comprising over 1500 signs that allows a group of actors, dancers, singers and musicians to improvise together in real-time. The technique was created by New York composer Walter Thompson during the late 1970s for jazz musicians. It has since evolved into a multidisciplinary language that is practiced worldwide. Ensemble members will teach foundational signs and signals of Soundpainting and conduct the group in exploratory improvisation.

All levels of experience and all types of performing artists are welcome. While not a youth-focused workshop, it is open to youth ages 10 and up.

Participate using the artform of your choice: If you're an actor or dancer, wear comfortable clothing you can move in. If you're a musician, bring the instrument you'd like to play. And singers, be prepared to sing!

These workshops are part of Strike Anywhere's summer residency leading up to their show this fall. POP UP: An Artistic Treasure Hunt leads audience members on a local scavenger hunt for performative happenings that incorporate a community Soundpainting chorus. Make sure to save the date on October 2 and 3. Learn more about POP UP and Strike Anywhere's residency >
