Episode 4: Anna Deavere Smith

Anna Deavere Smith is an actress, playwright, teacher and author. Smith's theater combines the journalistic technique of interviewing her subjects with the art of interpreting their words through performance. Her plays include Fires In the Mirror (a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize) and Twilight: Los Angeles (two Tony Award nominations). Her most recent play and film, Notes from the Field, examines the school-to-prison pipeline, the criminal justice system and contemporary activism. Time Magazine named the stage version of Notes from the Field one of the Top 10 Plays of the year.

Smith co-stars on the new ABC / Shonda Rhimes series, For the People and she appears on the hit ABC series Black-ish. She is also a University Professor at Tisch School of the Arts and the founding director of the Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue at New York University.

Smith is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the 2012 National Endowment for the Humanities Medal (awarded by President Obama); the 2013 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for achievement in the arts; the 2017 Ridenhour Courage Prize; and the 2017 George Polk Career Award in Journalism.
