Dartmouth Youth Winds returns this winter!
Attention, middle school musicians and those who cheer them on: the Dartmouth Youth Wind Ensemble is back for another year! Registrations are now being accepted, and rehearsals begin January 19.
Open to students of the Upper Valley and surrounding regions, grades 6–8, the program has offered hundreds of Upper Valley youth the chance to play exciting music in a big ensemble, mentored by Dartmouth student musicians who share their love of making music in a fun-loving atmosphere. The middle schoolers attend weekly rehearsals, where they play side-by-side with the student musicians of Dartmouth College, who also work with the students in break-out sessions to go over tricky parts and special techniques. The college and middle school students all perform together in a final concert on the Hopkins Center’s Spaulding Auditorium stage. The $45 fee covers all six rehearsals and the final concert! :
Rehearsals take place Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 am, January 19 & 26 and February 2, 9, 16 & 23 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, in Hanover, NH. The final concert is Saturday, March 2, 1:30 pm, in Spaulding Auditorium, and is free and open to the public.

MORE ABOUT THE DARTMOUTH COLLEGE YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE
Youth Winds is focused on advancing performing skills and confidence in young, developing musicians through the exploration and performance of carefully chosen, level-appropriate music for wind ensemble. During weekly rehearsals, students will enjoy the opportunity to learn in full ensemble rehearsal, as well as sectional practice for their unique instrument and occasional one-on-one pull-out instruction.
Daniel Buchner, Interim Director of the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble, will oversee and direct the program, calling upon his experience teaching music on all levels, from the elementary classroom through professional. Dan will be joined by student members of the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble as mentors in each of the instrumental sections, along with student conductor Frederika Rentzeperis ’20 leading the ensemble from the podium. The program was started by former DCWE Director Matthew Marsit, now chair of Instrumental Studies at Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music.
MEET FREDRIKA, THIS YEAR’S STUDENT CONDUCTOR!
From Middletown, Maryland, Frederika plays flute, piccolo, and saxophone and last year mentored the DCYE flute section. She has played in the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble and Marching Band since freshman year and has also sung with the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir. Here at Dartmouth, she is a double major in biology and anthropology who plans to graduate in 2020 and hopes to go on to further studies and training in neuro-oncology (brain cancer). She also loves to draw and paint (especially anatomy and portraits), has recently started doing woodworking, and enjoys SciFi (especially Doctor Who and Star Trek) as well as video games.
