"Life is hard, and it's nice to have a moment of joy."  —Chris Miller '97

As a writing, producing and directing trifecta, Phil Lord '97 and Chris Miller '97 have become one of Hollywood's hottest commodities. Their films—which include successful franchises such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—have grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide. More importantly, Phil and Chris are genuinely nice, smart guys who happen to have a knack for creating original, funny and often surprisingly poignant work.

At Dartmouth, Lord and Miller drew comic strips for The D and made short animated films that caught the eye of Disney. After graduation, they started in television (Clone High, How I Met Your Mother) before jumping to the big screen in 2009 with Meatballs. Clever, crowd-pleasing mayhem soon followed: 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie (and its "block"buster franchise).

In February 2019 the duo gave the world a reimagined, multi-ethnic superhero universe and took home the Best Animated Feature Oscar for producing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. They just signed a five-year deal with Sony Television and their latest animated feature, Connected, hits theaters next month.

Join us to talk about superheroes and little plastic bricks, the pain and joy of comedic collaboration and what's next for this dynamic duo (hint: Ryan Gosling and space!)
