A Double Life
with director Catherine Masud in personA Double Life
with director Catherine Masud in personThe gripping true story of Stephen Bingham, a lawyer who spent 13 years on the run from the FBI, who accused him of assisting an attempted prison break in 1971.
August 21, 1971. On this day prisoners' rights leader George Jackson allegedly attempts to break out of California's notorious San Quentin Prison. Three guards and two inmates are brutally murdered, and Jackson is shot dead. Caught in this storm is a young lawyer named Stephen Bingham, Jackson's last visitor, who is indicted on five counts of first-degree murder for allegedly passing him a gun. Without even considering any other suspects, the FBI launches a major manhunt and issues a nationwide all-points bulletin (APB) for Bingham's arrest, but he is nowhere to be found.
For 13 years, Bingham lives a shadowy existence under an assumed name, navigating a world of danger in a distant country even as he dreams of a return home to face his accusers and clear his name. From the hallowed halls of Yale to participation in the Mississippi Freedom Summer of '64, from activist attorney to fugitive from justice, this documentary follows Bingham's remarkable odyssey of sacrifice, redemption and the unyielding pursuit of justice.
