Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid

Screen legends Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the buddy film with this 1969 smash hit set in the Old West.

The Sundance Kid (Redford) is the frontier's fastest gun. His sidekick, Butch Cassidy (Newman), is always dreaming up new ways to get rich fast. If only they could blow open a baggage car without also blowing up the money-filled safe inside ... or remember that Sundance can't swim before they escape the law by leaping off a cliff into rushing rapids. Times are changing in the West and luck seems to be running out for the Hole in the Wall gang.

Chased doggedly by a special posse, the two decide to make their way to South America in hopes of evading their pursuers once and for all. Never mind that they don't speak Spanish—they'll manage somehow. Winning four Academy Awards (including Best Screenplay and Best Song), this thoroughly enjoyable blend of fact and fancy is made with true affection for a bygone era and immortalizes the two flashiest, friendliest, funniest outlaws who ever called out "hands up!" D: George Roy Hill, US, 1969

Programmer's Note

The Dartmouth Film Society chose this classic not only because it is celebrating its 50th anniversary, but also because it serves as an interesting companion film to Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, another buddy-comedy infused with Western flavoring.
