Bacurau

September 17 - 23, 2020

This event occurred as part of the 20/21 Hop Film season. This is an archived view.

An absolutely wild treat from Brazil, colliding grindhouse storytelling and anti-colonialist allegory into a stew of hyper violent, unpredictable entertainment.

20/21 Hop Film

Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, has just mourned the loss of its 94-year-old matriarch, Carmelita. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga, Kiss of the Spider Woman) notice that their village has literally vanished from online maps and a UFO-shaped drone is seen flying overhead.

There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrive to play the most dangerous game with the villagers. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their remote community. The mercenaries just may have met their match in the fed-up, resourceful denizens of little Bacurau.

Like this year's Best Picture-winning Parasite, this Western/horror/comedy mashup resonates deeply with our current moment and proves that a political film can still be wildly entertaining. Ty Burr of the Boston Globe writes: "There's a reason this movie was a critical and popular success in Brazil: It resonates. And despite the beauty of the weathered local faces this movie celebrates, it resonates for anyone, anywhere, watching it. "What do they call the inhabitants of Bacurau?" a young boy is asked. "People!" he responds. Just so." D: Juliano Dornelles and Kleber Mendonça Filho, Brazil, subtitled, 2020, 2h11m

Prof. Andre Pagliarini, who is teaching a course this term on Brazilian cinema, provides some context and insight into the film in this engaging intro video.

“The f*** yeah attitude to Bacurau, its joyous anger, surprises almost as much as the film’s continual shifts and sleights of hand.”

Variety

"This movie is truly one of a kind; seek it out if you’re feeling defiant."
